There were 50 Highlands at the Puyallup Fair for the September 18th Scottish Highland Cattle Show, making this a super-points show. NWHCA members showing were Kevin and Amy Allen of Allen Acres, Cyril and Merry Colbeck of Bear Creek Farms, Bonnie McLarty of Blueberry Meadows Highlands, Bob and Gina Ames of Boise Creek Farm, Tom and Deanna Newton of Bitterroot Farms, Lisa Jennings and Mike Fantom of Five Star Farm, Garden Home Farm, John and Jean Bates of Hemlock Highlands, Naomi Ewing and Sue and Alan Wiemer of Run-A-Muk Ranches, Paul and Amy Lagerquist of Skookumchuck Farm, and Robert and Doris Swalander of Swalander Highlands. Congratulations to Run-A-Muk Ranches for Grand Champion cow/calf pair, to Swalander Highlands for Grand Champion female, and to Run-A-Muk Ranches for Grand Champion bull.

The fall board meeting followed the cattle show. Members who earned Grand Champion or Reserve Champion for cow/calf, female, and bull were presented with a beautiful embroidered throw. Special thanks to member Betty Jo Nolan who again generously presented a cash award to first-time exhibitors at the Puyallup Fair. This year, the $50 cash prize was split between four new breeders, so true to form, Betty Jo added another $50 so that each of the new breeders could receive a significant amount. Thank you Betty Jo!

There were two shows at the Evergreen State Fair this year: a junior show and the main show. Despite the state fair website advertising the incorrect main show date, the shows were well represented. We had 8 entries in our Junior show with several kids showing for the first time. They all did very well. There were 38 Highlands in the barn represented by 7 breeders: Bear Creek Farms, Bitterroot Farms, Hemlock Highlands, Richmark Highland Cattle, RunAMuk, and Ian Schleh. Grand Champion winners were: Cow/Calf: RAM Roche from RunAMuk, Female: Vanna White of Hem-Loch, and Bull: Wantan "Little Boy", bred by Ian Schleh. To see more Junior show photos, click here.

Hello all, Summer has come and gone and it is now time for the fall shows. This is an exciting time for all breeders. It sounds like our show numbers are going to be real good. New ranches will be showing up to compete. Puyallup has 46 animals entered. We need 50 for a super point show, so if you have one or two more to pop in your trailer Ellen has assured me they will be able to be entered. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will receive a trophy for Heifer, Bull, and Cow/Calf for our Regional Show in Puyallup. Points are awarded for each animal in each class for the different shows all over the United States. At the end of the show year, after Denver, the points are calculated and trophies are awarded at the National Convention. The recognition in the Bagpipe not only is fun but puts your Farm or Ranch name out for all to see. Please abide by the new no clipping rule as it will be strictly enforced.
Looking forward to seeing you all again.

The AHCA National Convention was held in Boseman, Montana this year. Since it was so close Susan and I decided to venture out and attend. Packed up the Fifth Wheel, no not the stock trailer, and headed out. Tom and Cheryl Kammerzell were already there as Cheryl had to attend some early board meetings. Jay Howard also attended. We stayed in a beautiful campground overlooking the whole valley. Thursday was registration. Seeing old friends and meeting new ones is always the best part of any function. Thursday night was a casual banquet where RunAMuk received 4 trophies for the Roll of Excellence program. Friday was a full day of interesting talks on just about anything you might want to know. Friday night was dinner on your own and of course we went to Famous Dave's. This is Tom's favorite place to eat. Saturday was another full day. All morning was the Annual Membership Meeting. The different committees reported what they were doing and hope to do over the years. It's exciting to see where the Association is headed in the future. Make sure you read and understand the new show rules on clipping; this is for the Regional shows also. Check out the steer classes. These rules and classes are in the 2009 Premium books for Puyallup, Spokane, and Yakima. I tried to get them in Monroe but was too late for this year. Saturday night was the final banquet held at the KG Angus Ranch. Really nice place and a cattle setup to die for. Saying goodbye wasn't any easier than at Denver, but it was good to be home. Hope to see you all at the different shows this year. If you ever wanted to show and just feel uneasy about any aspect of showing feel free to contact RunAMuk or just show up and you will receive all the help you need. See you at the Fairs!

The NWHCA Spring Meeting was a great success. John and Jean Bates were wonderful hosts who seemed to be everywhere, making sure that we all had a wonderful time. Eagle Haven Winery provided the perfect setting on this sunny day. Highlights of the event included speakers John Bates (Farmer First Aid); Tom Kammerzell and John Kahlberg (Beef Processing and Marketing); and Murray Benjamin and John Bates (Pasture Management). Outgoing President Cheryl Kammerzell presented Sue Wiemer and Naomi Ewing with a silver platter award. There were many nice things to chose from at the silent auction. Board of Director elections were held during the meeting. Our new President is Tom Newton and new or returning Directors are Cheryl Kammerzell and Robin Wolfe. After the meeting John Bates took many of us on a tour of his farm. We saw his extensive, well-organized beef operation and met many of his cow-calf pairs in the field. We enjoyed some tasty barbecue beef ribs, generously prepared for us by the Skagit County Cattleman's Association. Congratulations to Amy Lagerquist and Mary Ella Read, photography contest winners.
An excellent day... well done John and Jean!
